Just a quick follow-up to let you know how pleased I am with the 1895. Spent the day out on my property with it working from initially 50 yds., then 100 yds. and ultimately out to 200 yds.
Ran three different rounds thru each stage:
- Federal 300 gr. Trophy Bonded “Bear Claw”
- Hornady 325 gr. Lever Evolution FTX
- Underwood 430 gr. Hard Cast
For occasional target and plinking the XXXXXX worked fine. Gave me consistent groups at all three distances. The XXXXXX was a bit more accurate and would be my first choice as a hunting round for local deer and elk. The XXXXXX was, well interesting, to say the least. Other than as a bear or moose load I don’t think I’ll be shooting much of that stuff!
Your scope setup was pretty spot on and other than a bit of tweaking for my preferred hold-over and adjusting for the elevation of my property (over 3,600’) not much was needed. Thank you!
The fit, finish and ergonomics of the rifle were better than I had anticipated and shouldering it just felt “right” if that makes any sense.
I should have a photo or two up on Instagram tomorrow.
Great job and I’m honored to own this one.

Got the gun. I like it.

I just received my 1894SS Brush Hawg that you completed for me. I just want to thank you for the smooth transition and take the time to say…WOW!…what a beautiful job on this rifle! It was certainly worth the wait, and i can’t wait to get in out on the range. You and Chance (LeverGun Leather) are true Craftsmen, and thanks for being gentlemen to work with! This is now my absolutely favorite forearm and it will be a treasured heirloom in my family for many years to come.
All the best,

Thank you for the work you did on my Marlin 39A. The transformation from a lever action .22LR that I shot as a child into a packable and handy little .22LR just cannot be understated. The fit an finish from the recoil pad to the Grizzly Custom stamped tubular magazine is better than any custom rifle on the market today. The finish is sharp and consistent and the radius cuts on the upper receiver are first class .
I was able to get out to the range with the rifle this last weekend and it shoots perfectly. The Leupold Scout scope was right on target at 50 yards as received from you. After firing a magazine’s worth of .22LR with the Leupold, I simply twisted the Talley throw levers and was able to get right on target with the new iron sights. They too were right on at 50 yards. This again is a testament to your attention to detail and thorough craftsmanship.
As we discussed on the phone after I initially received the rifle back, my only real concern is which of my boys I’ll have to bribe to get some trigger time of my own on it.
Your workmanship, professionalism and attention to the smallest detail say volumes about your character and you can be sure that you have a customer for life. I’ll proudly display your rifle and be sending customers to your website when I run into folks out in the BLM land around here or at the local range. I hope to be able to send you a 30-30 in the future for a similar transformation.
I hope all is well for you and yours and wish you the best for the rest of the year and into 2016.
Captain Chad C.

It took more than a month to get out and shoot my new Brush Hawg. I can only say that my expectations were exceeded and it was worth the wait and expense. I am the envy of all my shooting friends.
Great rifle which shoots as good as it looks. Great job!

I wanted to thank you for the exceptional work you did on my Marlin 1895GBL. Everything about it exceeded my expectations. Just as important as the quality of your gunsmithing, is your second to none customer service. All of my questions were answered in a professional and timely manor. When you learned of my upcoming trip, you not only made sure I had the rifle back on time, but a full week ahead of schedule. It’s refreshing to see someone take so much pride in their work. Lew, you’ve earned my business and I look forward to working with you on more projects in the future. Thanks again.

Just thought I’d drop you a note and let you know I love my rifle. You did a great job (the action is so much smoother) and it shoots like a dream. Looks fantastic as well.

Sorry I have taken so long to get back to you. I received the rifle and it looks great. I wanted to take it out and test shoot it before writing to you. I have tried 4 different types of ammo in it so far. Two 300 grainers, a 405 and a 430 grainer. They all shoot well, didn’t need to adjust the sights at all. I am very pleased with the work you did and will recommend you to anyone.
Thanks again for a job well done.

This is Vincent, just giving you an update on the Marlin Guide Gun you worked on for me. After having put 80+ rounds thru it, I have to say I’m very impressed with the quality of your work. The fit and finish are outstanding – in fact it has to be one of the prettiest guns I own. But more importantly it shoots like a beast. I still can’t put more than 40 full power rounds or so down range in one sitting without acquiring a flinch, but it’s an awesome set up thanks to you. I’ll highly recommend your work to anyone who asks, and you’re definitely on my favorites for any future work.
Thanks again Lew!

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that my parcel arrived safely Friday afternoon. The complete package is well balanced, functioning of the rifle is smooth and flawless, and the trigger is a dream ! Sights, crown, extended mag tube, bobbed hammer, etc.etc.., everything is excellent. I even managed to get this beast out to do a little break in on Saturday morning, and was very pleased with the results. Got her grouping well with Hornady 350gr. FNSP and IMR3031, with more load work planned in the coming weeks. I thank you for doing what you do, and doing it so well !! A quality product along with excellent customer service. You made it a pleasure doing business with Grizzly Custom Guns.

I meant to get this sent to you sooner, my apologies I have been traveling. But the 1895G rifle is absolutely fantastic! I could not be happier! An amazing job, not only did you have to fix the errors the other gunsmiths did, but you did the work correctly the first time and ahead of schedule. That is hard if not impossible to get in this world today. Your attention to detail is remarkable! You and your shop are first class, in business and in your work. I appreciate your time and patience in answering my questions before the work was started, and since this is the second rifle you have worked on for me, I can’t wait to send you another.

I have had an opportunity to fire 100 rounds through the new .44 Magnum Brush Hawg. It is a great gun, accurate, outstanding workmanship and a terrific looking lever gun. I am proud to have it hanging on the wall along with my favorite lever gun, my 45/70 Brush Hawg. I can’t wait for you to customize the Marlin 41. I know it will be flat out beautiful and it is already as accurate as the 45/70. Thanks for your workmanship and innovative ideas.

Thank you. It was a pleasure doing business with you.

I received the rifle on Friday when I returned from a business trip. Wow! The work you did on it was absolutely fantastic! I can’t begin to tell you how pleased I am with the result. As I have stated before, I am saving my money to send you another rifle. Thanks again for such an awesome job on the rifle.

Picked up my new toy (45/70) from my FFL about 2 PM .Went straight home unpacked and cleaned it. Went out in my yard and started annihilating a gallon milk jug from 50 yards out. I started with a hand load for a BFR 45-70 revolver 15.5 gr. of Trail Boss and a 300 gr. Cast Performance bullet (1200 fps). Mild and no kick. Shot groups 1″. Next load 31.2 gr. H4198 ,300 gr. Cast performance, 5 shots in 1 1/2″ group 1400 FPS mild recoil . Final group was with 55 gr. Varget ,350 gr. Hornady jacketed round nose, 5 shots in 1″, 1800 fps moderate recoil. Super Slick action, handy size, and great workmanship. All groups were shot standing and offhand (no rest or bench). To say I am pleased is a complete understatement. I own 10 terrific lever guns, all reworked by top flight gunsmiths and this is number one by a mile. Can’t wait for the 1894 44 mag. to ship.

I just wanted to thank you for the outstanding work you guys performed on my stainless Marlin 1895M XLR. I would have e-mailed you as soon as I received the rifle, but I wanted to shoot it first and trying to get to the range has been a pain the last couple of weeks. Anyway, when I opened the gun case, I was in awe of its bead blast finish. I could not believe my eyes. Stripping the parts of their nickel plating and going to the hard chrome finish was the kicker. That definitely makes the difference. The rear sight dovetail fill was also perfect. Basically, everything I requested was fulfilled with attention to detail: crown on the muzzle, ghost ring sights, enlarged lever loop, bobbed hammer, DRC trigger etc… The action is smooth as butter with a clean trigger break at 2-3 lbs. For a 16-1/4″ barrel it printed pretty damn good at 50 and 100 yds. (factory Hornady 350 & 325gr bullets).
When I first started my research on customizing my XLR, I had just received my Marlin 1895 Guide Gun from Wild West Guns (in March), mind you I ordered it at the Shot Show in January of 2008. I will admit the Kevlar stock and nitride finish was the hold up. Anyway they did a good job, but I was looking for another custom shop to fulfill my needs. Enter you guys. When I was perusing your web sight and looked at some of the samples of your work, I said to myself, that’s what I want my gun to look like and low and behold, you guys did it. I will say that your work was definitely worth the money, and it was completed in a timely fashion!
In the future I will be sending you guys a few other guns to customize. Keep up the great work. Thanks again.

I am pleased to own 2 rifles, 1 shotgun and 1 1911 built by the guys at Grizzly Custom Guns. Each is an example of the highest quality workmanship! I’ve seen examples from other shops with sights and other modifications that just don’t look quite “right” to me. All of the guns that Lew and Tim have built for me are as aesthetically pleasing as they are reliable. Fit and finish are superb! I have a very short list of shops that I’m willing to recommend. Grizzly Custom is on that list. I’ll not hesitate to have them build more guns for me in the future!
